Does your feeder camera take a microSD card?

Check support first, then card size, formatting and playback for the actual camera.

The quick answer

Some feeder cameras use cloud storage without a usable card slot. Confirm local recording for your exact model before buying a card. VicoHome's published requirements are an example, not a specification for every feeder.

Applies to A compatibility guide with a VicoHome setup example. Card support depends on the camera model and firmware, not just its companion app.

Check support before shopping

Birdfy's product help center says microSD support was discontinued except on a few older first-generation Feeder, Cam and Bamboo/Mini versions. Do not assume that an opening or a card mentioned in an old review establishes current support.

Birdbuddy's connectivity page describes its feeders as having no local storage. A microSD purchase therefore does not add offline recording to that documented workflow.

For any other feeder, find the model's storage specification and ask whether local recording is available on the current firmware. Record the answer before selecting a capacity.

VicoHome example: choose a compatible card

For compatible cameras, VicoHome's published requirements specify genuine microSD cards from 8GB to 128GB, FAT32 formatting and Class 10 or higher. It warns against counterfeit or artificially expanded-capacity cards.

Apply that checklist only after confirming your VicoHome camera actually supports card recording. Another manufacturer's camera or app can have different limits. A larger or faster card does not establish compatibility by itself.

Our shopping checklist is simple: camera model, supported capacity, required format, speed class and the source of the specification. Keep the card packaging and your order details until the test recording is confirmed.

Prepare the card and format only after backup

Formatting erases the contents of the card. Copy any recordings you want to keep before proceeding, and confirm you have selected the intended camera.

VicoHome documents an in-app route through Camera Settings → SD Card Management → Format. Follow the on-screen confirmation and wait for completion. Its formatting guide specifies a powered, connected camera; if in-app formatting fails, it describes FAT32 formatting with a computer and card reader.

Use your camera manual for slot location and insertion instructions. If it offers no card-management controls, stop and recheck compatibility rather than forcing a card into an opening.

Verify a recording, not just detected capacity

VicoHome's backup-recording guide describes viewing the card through Library → SD Card, choosing the camera and confirming. Card recordings are a local backup in that documented workflow.

After setup, check a newly recorded event in the card view. Open the file and, if the model supports exporting it, test that the exported copy plays. Seeing total capacity alone confirms less than seeing a usable new recording.

Keep cloud and card views separate during the test. A clip visible in one location does not tell you that the same event was written successfully to the other.

If the card is not recognized

Compare the card's actual capacity and format with the camera's requirements, then record the exact app error. Back up accessible files before retrying formatting. A known compatible replacement card can help separate a card-specific issue from a camera issue.

If the error continues, send official support the camera model, app and firmware versions, card brand and capacity, format used and screenshots. Do not describe card support as offline recording unless the manufacturer explicitly documents recording during an internet outage. Read our storage and subscription guide before choosing a replacement camera.
